4 tips for optimising your CV with social media

I interviewed an ex company owner yesterday for a case study, and having successfully sold her company she was thinking of a future back in the world of the non-self-employed. As ever, the question of CVs came up, and where to start – the old blank page panic syndrome. Then this interesting article on optimising your CV popped up in my inbox this morning from LinkedIn. It’s not only useful information if you’re putting yourself and your skills back on the market, but is a timely reminder that what you say online forms part of the results uncovered when prospective employers do their research via the internet – and rest assured they do! Somehow some of those crazy photos and stories don’t seem as much fun as they used to!

The smallest billboard pays off

I recently bought a new car and when shifting over my personalised plate (IT ADV / www.itadvertising.co.nz) the car dealer suggested I have the plate re-manufactured to a European size, to go with the (very sexy) European car. The only problem was that European plates don’t have room for a URL. Having picked up a great new client via my plate last year I wasn’t underrating how valuable that detail was. My personalised plate remains $400 very well spent and the only compromise I made on shifting it to the new black (and did I mention very sexy?) vehicle was have the plate surround repainted bright red, of course, to fit in with my company branding.

A cool plate marketing idea I’ve seen is from Auckland company TXTMYPL8. You register with them, get a plate surround or sticker with a simple instruction and if someone is interested in your business (hopefully because your plate or branding on the vehicle is impressive rather than because of road rage!) they text your plate to 215 and get back in return your business contact details etc. Great value for around $10 a month. Just a bit unfortunate for me that their surrounds don’t fit my plate, and I’m not willing to put a sticker on my shiny new bumper. I’m awkward like that.
